Technology Autobiography: The Movie

Technology Autobiography: The Movie

Yesterday, we looked at some examples of technology autobiographies. You’ve also listened to the technology stories of others and have compared and contrasted that with your own experiences with technology. Now, we’re going to take that to a new level and make the next project for your web portfolio: an iMovie. You will plan, film, and edit this project from start to finis, and the movie will be included on your website.

What is the subject of your film, you ask? It should be a video version of your technology autobiography. Since we’re working with video, you can use images, sound, effects, and so on to help tell this story about your experience with technology.

Examples:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIekLXb6LLk: Literacy autobiography discussing family business, technology, and volleyball literacies.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUdwY0XLg84: autobiography where the speaker draws the story on paper; doesn’t actually appear in the video. Very linear approach, but creative.

Take some time now to brainstorm individually in your blogs. What do you want the overall "flavor" of the video to be? Will you talk in the video, or will you rely primarily on subtitles/text/images to drive the video? How will you communicate your personality through this video? Take about 10 minutes, then Jen will walk you through storyboarding so that you’ll be in good shape to start shooting when you get back from COSI.

Your Web Portfolio

Welcome! Over the next couple of days, you will design and build your very own digital web portfolio. This web portfolio will consist of:

  1. the website itself (designed with DreamWeaver and PhotoShop)
  2. a short video (edited in iMovie)
  3. a podcast (made with Garageband)

Additionally, you will also be working with blogs, which you may wish to link to your web portfolio.

While all of you will be working with the same software on the same projects, each person's web portfolio will look different. This is a great opportunity to express your unique personality through a variety of media, so I hope you're ready to have a lot of FUN over the next few days!

Here are some examples of web portfolios:

Remember: none of these people are expert website builders. If I can do it, then so can you. I look forward to getting to know you over the next couple of days and having a lot of fun with technology. Let's get started!
